Solutions to Common Wet Basement Problems

Living inside a home that is plagued with a wet basement can feel and smell noxious. Letting the problem persist can not only be an assault to the senses, but it can also cause a series of complications. The persisting moisture can pose as a great risk to the overall value of the house. When left unchecked and ignored the moisture can ruin floors and walls, become a breeding ground for mold, and even extend to damaging the roofing of the house. Aside from basement waterproofing your home, there are solutions to these common problems.

#1 Add Gutter Extensions

During heavy and continuous rains downspouts that are situated 5 feet or less from your house pumps a lot of water within the area of your home. When this water pools in the area, the tendency is for it to seep into your basement. A simple remedy is to add gutter extensions to guide the flow of water away from your house.

#2 Seal Cracks and Gaps

If you have observed water dribbling down the wall and into your basement, locate the areas and seal them properly. This is a temporary solution to the problem as sealants can wear our or simply redirect the flow of water. If the cracks and gaps usher in too much water, consult with an expert for more effective basement waterproofing techniques.

#3 Foundation Repair

This last solution isn’t that simple and may require the assistance of specialist in foundation & structural floor repair. As time goes by, the foundation of the house can overlap your house’s siding; this will redirect water straight into your basement. The reshaping of landscape and other methods involved in foundation repair will take time, effort, and money, but if this is done by an experienced contractor, you can say goodbye to your wet basement worries forever.
